Is This Rock Worth Anything? A Realistic Value Check
Here is the honest answer most rock pages avoid: the overwhelming majority of found rocks are worth nothing beyond their interest to you. But a small set genuinely carries value, and you can tell which camp yours is in with a few features and three tests, before wasting a trip to a dealer.
What actually has value

If your rock is a rounded gray, brown, or black lump with no crystals, no shine, and no visible fossil, it is almost certainly common and worth nothing on a market. That is not a knock on it, it is just the base rate. Value comes from being unusually hard, unusually transparent, unusually heavy, or unusually well-formed.
Three quick tests
- Hardness. Try to scratch it with a steel knife (about 5.5 on the Mohs scale). If steel will not scratch it, it is in the quartz-and-harder range, which is where most gem minerals live. Soft rocks that scratch easily are rarely valuable.
- Streak. Drag it across the unglazed back of a ceramic tile. A shiny gold rock that leaves a greenish-black streak is pyrite (fool's gold). Real gold leaves a gold streak and is soft enough to dent, not shatter.
- Heft. Weigh it in your hand against a same-sized ordinary rock. Noticeably heavier means dense minerals (metal ores, some meteorite candidates), which is worth a closer look.

The cube shape alone settles it most of the time. Gold never grows in neat cubes; pyrite almost always does.
Where "worth" really comes from
Even a correctly identified gemstone or crystal is worth far less rough than a beginner expects. Cutting, clarity, size, and market demand do most of the work, and a rough amethyst point that looks impressive can be a few dollars. Meteorites and fine mineral specimens are the exceptions where a raw find can be worth real money, which is exactly why the impostors (slag, pyrite, hematite) get so much hopeful attention. Identify honestly first, then price against sold listings rather than asking prices.
When the identifier helps
Identification is step one and value is step two.
